Students in Manchester are having their thumbprints digitally transformed into electronic codes, which can then be recognised by a computer program.
Under the scheme, pupils swipe a bar code inside the book they want borrow then press their thumb on to a scanner to authorise the loan. Books are returned in the same way.
The scheme is being trialled on junior classes at Higher Lane Primary in Whitefield, Bury, Greater Manchester.
Officials confirmed it is due to be extended to all pupils at the school, one of the areas largest primary schools, with 453 pupils aged four to 11.
School authorities defended the scheme on Thursday, and moved to reassure parents that the voluntary system, is heavily encrypted or coded and that no images of fingerprints would be stored.
But critics said they were “appalled” at the system, developed by Microsoft which is also being trialled in other parts of the country.

How I lost my faith in London
The cold indifference of other Londoners to my racist attack shows how systematic discrimination gets ingrained
There is a gut-wrenching scene in Michael Haneke's Code Inconnu, where Juliette Binoche is verbally abused on a Parisian metro train by a Turkish youth, and no one seems to notice. Just as things look set to get out of hand, however, an older Turkish passenger intervenes. I wasn't so lucky.
Last Saturday, I took a night bus from Marble Arch. At the next stop, four young men – about 16 to 20 years of age, all white – boarded the bus, looked around, and within a few minutes sat down surrounding me. I don't know why I caught their attention, but I cursed myself for reading Walden on a late-night bus. Then the abuse began.
"Hey Paki … did you not listen to Prince Harry? Get the fuck out of this country, you brown monkey … "
"Fairer than other Pakis … maybe his mum was a slut."
"You stink, like the rest of them do … soaked in curry, did ya?"
"Mowgli, you get paid in bananas or tikka masalas?"
Several other passengers boarded the bus at the next few stops. The young men, however, continued undaunted, imitating the behaviour of monkeys, playing with my book, and continuing the verbal assault.
I didn't have the nerve to confront them, fearing further aggravation. Two black men, standing on the concertina area of the bendy bus, laughed initially and then egged the gang on. Two other men of south Asian origin sitting further along stared helplessly at what was happening. At least 20 other passengers were on the bus, most of them older than the four youths. I shifted my eyes in every possible direction to ask for support. None was forthcoming.
Near King's Cross, after 15 minutes of torment, things became physical, as the relatively sober gang began to prod, pull and pinch me. I swiftly got out of the bus and climbed into the nearest taxi. Behind me, I saw that the gang had followed me.

Among 21 developed market democracies, we found that Britain does worst on child wellbeing and badly on teenage births, imprisonment, drug abuse, trust, obesity, social mobility and mental illness. This week brought fresh confirmation of the pervasive and profound inequality in Britain in the form of a 460-page government-commissioned study – An Anatomy of Economic Inequality in the UK – which described a nation in which the richest 10% are more than 100 times as wealthy as the poorest 10%.

London - World Famous City of the Military Style Spy Drones
FROM THE GUARDIAN
Documents from the South Coast Partnership, a Home Office-backed project in which Kent police and others are developing a national drone plan with BAE, have been obtained by the Guardian under the Freedom of Information Act.
They reveal the partnership intends to begin using the drones in time for the 2012 Olympics. They also indicate that police claims that the technology will be used for maritime surveillance fall well short of their intended use – which could span a range of police activity – and that officers have talked about selling the surveillance data to private companies. A prototype drone equipped with high-powered cameras and sensors is set to take to the skies for test flights later this year.
Beautiful London - The Biggest Extremist Ghetto In the West!
Senior policymakers in the United States said the attempted suicide bomb attack by Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, who is thought to have become radicalised in London, was further evidence that one of the biggest threats to US security came from Britain, where the capital has been dubbed “Londonistan” by critics.
There was also criticism of the “ghettoisation” of British Muslims, compared with the “assimilation” of Muslims in America.
Muslim immigrants to the US were much better integrated in society and considered themselves Americans “within a generation” because the US embraced the “melting pot” concept, said Marc Thiessen, former chief speechwriter for President George W Bush and a former Pentagon aide.
“That doesn’t exist in Europe in the same way and particularly in Britain, which is a more socially stratified society than the US,” he said. “They live in Muslim ghettoes and feel alienated from the larger society and not accepted.”
London - Capital City of The Worlds Greatest Stop
Last year about 250,000 people were stopped – about 700 a day. This jumped by one third in 2008. There has been a steady increase since the first year of the Act, when just 10,200 were stopped. Even Lord Carlile, the independent reviewer of terror legislation, who normally supports a tough government line, suggested that implications of the ruling were quite serious and added that Section 44 was being used far too much.

Retreiving Perfectly Good Food From The Waste In London Towne - Is A Crime
Legally, raiding bins is a grey area. The rubbish still belongs either to the shop that owns it or the company that's due to collect it – taking it is "theft by finding". But the police left us alone.
FROM THE GUARDIAN
But the circumstances that made it possible for me to live this way also made me angry. Even if the businesses and homeowners couldn't reduce the amount of waste, they didn't have to dispose of their surplus as rubbish. FareShare, the food redistribution charity, say they could redistribute 15 times more surplus food than they currently do. Short-life housing schemes have waiting lists hundreds of names long.
But instead of exploring such schemes, many organisations put huge effort into stopping people who want their rubbish from taking it. Bins are locked. ...
Several skipping spots that were reliable sources of meals have been sabotaged – a large branch of EAT, for example, used to throw away sacks of sandwiches, wraps, salads, yoghurts and fruit every day. It still does, but now the shop assistants open every packet before putting it in the bag, emptying yoghurt over salads and sandwiches to make them inedible. At New Covent Garden, skippers have been handed fliers carrying the Metropolitan police's logo telling them that taking waste would be considered theft.

LONDON UNDERGROUND - CATCH AN EARFUL OF THE SMARMY PONY TAILED STAFF!
FROM JONATHON MACDONALD.COM
We all thought the train was heading further east but actually, for reasons we shall never know, the train was terminating at Holborn and we were ushered out onto the platform by two (shouting) staff in Underground uniforms.
The elderly man was slow to get off in the mad rush, hence the entrapment.
A few people around called to staff to open the door again so he could be released.
About 30 seconds later the doors opened again and he removed his arm.
I watched as he calmly relayed his experience to the staff member (who was called Ian by the way).
Ian didn’t think it was a problem – in fact, he was furious that the guy had mentioned it at all, especially as the guy was standing close to the track.
After a while, Ian started shouting at the guy to “stand back there is a fucking train approaching“.
The elderly guy quietly questioned why Ian had to swear (as did several other passengers).
Ian literally screamed in this guys face (and I quote): “because there is a fucking train approaching and I need to make sure nobody is over the fucking yellow line“.
